Since 2001, when the company was established as Ahlström Consulting, we have provided structural and civil engineering design services of the highest standards. From our beginnings in the UK, where we specialised in structural steel and concrete design, to today, where clients in such varied industries as manufacturing, mining and commercial industries can rely on us for a full suite of design and consulting services, our single driving force has always been doing things the right way, the first time, every time. We are passionate about investigating and getting to the root of things, which is why we are leaders in the fields of structural and civil design, quality assurance and forensic structural engineering. We want to be able to answer the question “Why do things go wrong?” As a company on a growth trajectory, we have now also expanded and created the subsidiary company, ASDE Leabua, a 100% Black-owned and managed consulting firm which offers the same top-quality, award-winning levels of service and design that you have come to expect from the ASDE group. With our aim set high, we are ready to target infrastructure development and are determined to ensure that South African structural and civil engineering design is unparalleled in the continent, and able to rival international standards.

STRUCTURAL AND CIVIL DESIGN

Steel design, Concrete design, Finite element analysis, Dynamic analysis, Research. The cornerstone of our business, civil and structural design is our passion. We believe our success is the result of a comprehensive understanding of the client’s needs. ASDE’s aim is to strike the perfect balance between aesthetics, cost, durability and environmental responsibility. While our years of traditional structural and civil design experience includes residential, commercial and mining projects, we tend to focus on unusually challenging building types.

STRUCTURAL FAILURE INVESTIGATION

Concrete carbonation identification, Concrete sulphide attack, Metal fatigue failure, Weldment failure, Vibration stress analysis and identification, Defending claims. When structures fail, or begin to fail, it is up to us to find not only the cause, but the best possible solution in the shortest possible time and at the best possible cost, all while ensuring that the new design will stand the test of time. By combining state-of-the-art technologies with experience, expertise and cuttingedge forensic techniques, we are able to effectively gather, analyse and distil the facts, find the cause and design the solution.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Concrete strength testing, Concrete durability testing, Steel fabrication analysis, Steel erection monitoring. Thanks to our expertise in design and forensic investigation, ASDE frequently serves as a third-party quality assurance partner during construction projects. Through a series of analyses, we are able to accurately predict the development of deficiencies in the construction, and design preventive solutions before the issues arise. From analysing blueprints to on-site construction and building technique monitoring, we can help ensure that constructions are compliant with accepted South African building stan-dards, such as SANS 2001-CC1&2 and COLTO, thereby ensuring our clients’ accountability.

STRUCTURAL AUDITING AND YEARLY “CONSTRUCTION REGULATIONS, 2014” SIGN - OFF

According to the latest published Construction Regulations, 2014 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 published by the Department of Labour on 7 February 2014, the owner of a structure must ensure that – “2(a) inspections of that structure are carried out periodically by competent persons in order to render the structure safe for continued use; (b) that the inspection contemplated in paragraph (a) are carried out at least once every six months for the first two years and thereafter yearly (c) the structure is maintained in such a manner that it remains safe for continued use; (d) the records of inspections and maintenance are kept and made available on request to an inspector. Regarding the above ASDE, has put together an insurance product that maintains all the aspects of this regulation which includes PR.ENG. Sign-off and safeguarding of safety reports ready for any Safety Inspector.

CONCRETE CORE DRILLING AND DURABILITY TESTING

At ASDE, we employ a variety of methods to analyse and test a structure. One of our most important tools is concrete core drilling and durability testing, whereby we extract samples from concrete structures in order to holistically analyse the current state of the building and accurately predict any potential failure. This is an invaluable tool in tackling the repair and maintenance of existing infrastructure.

3D LASER SCANNING

Among the state-of-the-art technologies we employ to analyse and investigate structures is 3D scanning technology. This technology allows us to create a full threedimensional scan of any structure, which is then computerised and allows us to not only study the structure in great detail, but also allows us to perform numerous algorithm-based tests without placing the structure under any unnecessary stresses. All our engineers are fully accredited in the 3D scanning technology.

DRONE AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY

We utilize a special drone that is fitted with a high definition 4K camera that enables us to take UHD footage of any structure. We use this technology to complete our visual inspections, without the need to install costly scaffolding.

PROJECT EXECUTION

ASDE frequently designs concrete repair and steel retrofit solutions, which are of a complex nature. Subsequently ASDE spends a considerable amount of time training the contractors to complete the complex work. It is this exact reason why ASDE decided to execute project engineering solutions as Principal Contractor.
